Concept Explanation

Gamma Rays

Gamma rays have wavelengths of about one-hundred-billionth of a meter. Gamma rays are the frequency range 3times10^{18} hz  to  5times10^{22} hz . French chemist Paul Villard first identified gamma rays in 1900 from the element radium, which had been isolated by Marie and Pierre Curie just two years before. Y-rays are the electromagnetic waves of frequency range 3 x 1010 Hz to 5 x 1044 Hz. y-rays have nuclear origin. These rays are highly energetic and are produced by the nucleus of the radioactive substances.

  • Gamma rays have nuclear origin .
  • These rays are highly energetic and are produced by the nucleus of the radioactive substances.
  • Only a thick sheet of lead or a Concrete wall will stop them.
  • Gamma rays are produced by radio active materials, nuclear power plants and nuclear bombs., and can be detected with photographic film or a machine called a Geiger counter.
  • Gamma rays can turn atoms into ions by causing them to release electrons. This ionizing ability of gamma rays is used in radiotherapy to target and kill cancer cells in patients.
  • Gamma rays are also useful in medical diagnosis. In Positron Emission Tomography (PET),a patient is injected with small amounts of a radioactive material .This material emits gamma rays. for a short period of time.
  • The gamma rays are detected by a PET scanner Or camera.
  • Computer analysis Converts this data into a three-dimensional image. PET scans, like the one allow doctors to study how parts of a patient are functioning.
  • Uses

    Y-rays are used

    (1) in the treatment of cancer and tumour.

    (2) to preserve the food stuffs for a long time as the soft y-rays can kill microorganisms easily.

    (3) to produce nuclear reactions.

    (4) to provide valuable information about the structure of atomic nucleus.
